Self checkouts: I love them. You don't?
Why oh why do people hate these things so much? I much prefer them to standing in one of may queues of 5 people all with full shopping trollies. This is what people say:
"Never use one hate the things""Why should I work for the shop and do their job?""It's putting staff out of a job.""Companies are making more profit by having less staff""They are complicated to use""I much prefer to speak to someone""Soon there will be no tills left and that will be the day you realise"
Each of the above are probably correct but all almost certainly incorrect, in my opinion. I will take each one and state my reasoning
Never use one hate the things : this is only your opinion. Other people like using them.
Why should I do the work for the shop and do their job? : Stop being so prissy. Just because someone works on a till doesn't make them subservient to you, their customer.
It's putting staff out of a job. : No, this is not necessarily the case. Say it's a store which has hundreds of thousands of products. If customers are buying these products constantly then shelves are going to need stocking faster and more efficiently, so formerly those till-only staff can be put to other uses such as restocking, re-ordering, be trained in other areas. Increasing their skillset and therefore making them more valuable to the company and also most likely increase wages.
Companies are making more profit by having less staff : I don't think that less staff will be required in my opinion. There will be a higher stillset of staff, yes; but people can be trained. There will also be a need for new staff skills to support the new self scan systems. Then there are technical staff (who will then have more employment opportunities) to install and support the till technology. Also, the point of having a business is to make money and profit otherwise it's not a business, it's a charity. That's how capitalism works.
They are complicated to use : Seriously? In 2019? If you can use an ATM/Cash Machine and you are physically able to put a few items in a bag then you'll be fine. If not, then join a queue for a manned* till.
I much prefer to speak to someone : Join a queue for a manned* till; it's no problem. Personally, I just want to get in and out of a shop/store as quickly as I possibly can and I've no time for chatting.
Soon there will be no tills left and that will be the day you realise. : If you seriously think this will happen, you need to wake up and smell the coffee. Maybe in a few hundred years we may get close to this. Yes, it's being tried and tested - quite successfully by Amazon in its own test stores but the technology isn't anywhere near where it needs to be to make this work globally.
I may keep this page updated with more rubbish that I hear about self service tills.*It's not a personed till. Political Correctness has gone too bloody far.
